-the body is a temple so nourish it with reverence-
Virtually all animal food and treats are designed for the human eye. We aren’t nearly as preoccupied with the visual aspect of food. We can care less how it looks (although the funkier it smells, the better we like it...carrion, anyone?). A lot of what is sold to you for us is the equivalent of human junk food. You know how people look when they eat too many cakes, pies or cream sauces? While you are well intentioned ( and we do love you for it ), you’re shortening the life span of your beloved animal companion. As a service to you and the dogs you love, feel free to share the following recipe with them and their chefs: mix equal amounts of chicken broth and water and fill plastic cups 3/4 full. Add frozen peas, shredded carrots and frozen french fries. Put the cups into your freezer and once solid, serve to your dog on the dog days of summer. You can’t buy a healthier treat than this. Another frozen and equally healthy version is to use equal amounts of Gatorade and water, adding blueberries, strawberries and mandarin oranges ( please, check with your vet for no-no fruits that can be toxic for animals with certain health issues ). DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG PIG EARS OR ANY PORK RELATED TREATS. Not only because they are extremely fattening but because they cause gastrointestinal issues to arise - from pancreatitis (which can be a life threatening illness) to documented cases of e-coli. As an alternative give your dog beef products, which are virtually fat free and have not been shown to cause health problems. In fact, beef ears have a good amount of fiber and as you know, fiber is a friend to the colon!
