How Our Dogs Give Back to Their Community

At our sanctuary, we believe they not only have souls, but that they are generously affectionate, unconditionally loyal and profoundly intuitive, and that they share all of this with us each and every day. Fortunately, our dogs are able to share all of their healing virtues through their "community service". Our dogs give back to the lost, lonely and forgotten people in our community without fail. The service they provide is pure, hopeful and eloquent, without words ever being spoke. We hope that you can donate to our sanctuary so that we can continue to give back to those that benefit most from our "canine counseling." Together, you can join us in our truly meaningful work and continue living the embodiment of an altruistic existence.

The following are observations by various staff at Maryhurst regarding the therapeutic impact of the save that dog pack's regular visits:

"I was impressed by the girls as they got to know the dogs; relating their feelings about pets that they had. This allowed the girls to start processing any sadness or grief that they were feeling. They were able to connect to happier times in their lives, moments in their past where an animal they loved was present. I noted how certain personalities of individual girls connected with certain personalities of the dogs. At first, some of the girls were fearful or hesitant but gradually they allowed themselves to trust the dogs as they might in human interaction. I enjoyed watching the girls nurture the animals, showing them kindness and gentleness as the dogs won them over."

Kelly Hudgins, Maryhurst Treatment Coordinator

"We had one girl who was very skeptical about playing with the dogs, being very negative and almost refusing to participate because she didn't think it would help her. Once staff persuaded her to go, she was the one having the most fun. The smiles on all their faces, and seeing them laughing and working together to play with the dogs was a wonderful experience. I love that it showed the girls how they can experience a reciprocation of feelings with someone or something and not only were the dogs making them happy, but they were helping the dogs as well!"

Shannon Hinkle, Direct Care Youth Counselor

"I enjoy dog therapy with our clients, I feel that the clients get an opportunity to spend time with dogs since they don't get to see their own pets or they might miss their pets. Some of our clients grew up with pets and that opportunity was taken away from them so this is very helpful to them. Also, dogs are so loveable and friendly, its just awesome!!"

Marquita Randle, Direct Care Youth Counselor

"Thank you so very much for yesterday.  We truly had a great time.  When we were going back to the dorm we saw Katherine leaving. She let down the window so we could say goodbye again and one of the dogs jumped right in a client's arms.  It was truly a blessing.  Thanks so very much.  We are ready for the next visit!  Thanks again to you, Save That Dog Sanctuary and all the dogs!!!"

Carol Rowan, Direct Care Youth Counselor
