Jethro is six years old - a Bluetick Coonhound and also a Katrina refugee that we took in October of 2004 (along with Ellie). He was found in Mississippi, starved and traumatized like thousands who endured the hurricane; humans and animals alike. Over the past three years, Jethro has more than made up for it all by gaining weight (a bit too much, in fact) and today he is a very happy, well adjusted, quite handsome and extremely affectionate fella. In fact, Jethro loves to hug. Often, when he sees a person sitting, he literally stands up and puts his front legs on your shoulders. Then, as he stares deeply into your eyes, waiting to receive that look of love, he lays a big ‘ole sloppy Mississippi kiss right on your face. Jethro was adopted once, but he had a problem with the concept of house training. You’ve heard of “The Terminator” ? Well, here we call Jethro, “The Urinator”. He does fine here at the sanctuary, mainly because the dogs go in and out at will (due to the fact that we’ve lived in a camper since 1998 and the doors don’t really close anymore). We also have 130 acres of trees so “The Urinator” can urinate ad infinitum. Jethro weighs around 110 pounds so he drinks a lot of H2O...you get the point. Jethro tends to intimidate some of the other male dogs and occasionally there are words exchanged between them. As long as no one takes his spot at the food trough or monopolizes his sleeping spot in the camper, he’s fine. Usually, the dogs just roll their eyes at him when he’s cranky but as long as he gets his way with no fisticuffs, he’s a happy camper - literally. Jethro never starts fights but he occasionally has gashes from some sort of disagreement between he and another canine. It seems that he doesn’t really know how big he is or he wouldn’t have a mark on him. He most certainly could put some hurtin’ on any of these dogs but at heart, he seems to be a pacifist. A pacifist who growls when his personal space is invaded.
