Emmy looks like a cross between a Whippet and a Parson’s Terrier but since she was plucked from the mean streets of a Jeffersonville, Indiana Taco Hell by a concerned passerby. No collar, no microchip, no visible human companion nearby - just this seventeen-pound fluff puff of a dog. At first glance, she’s a docile, quiet, somewhat skittish dog. But when Emmy is irritated or stubborn, she can be snappish. Or rather she used to be snappish. Aggressive responses at our sanctuary to anything are intolerable and when a new dog bites the hand that literally feeds it, discussions must be had. With one highly emotive and extremely loud tantrum thrown by the Alpha care giver, Emmy learned that when we are respectfully requested to get out of the truck or get off the bed, we do so without biting, snarling or lunging at the Alpha. The Alpha sees all, knows all and rules all. Hopefully, we’ll get Emmy up on the petfinder.com site before too long. Allowing her enough time to relax and not be so tightly wound will not only benefit her but her future family, too. That’s the beauty of our sanctuary: no animal is put on petfinder.com before they’re ready to go with the flow of society, such as it is. No time limits, no unrealistic expectations (which are premeditated resentments) and enough of the right kind of guidance, acceptance and patience to help even the most maladjusted of muttigrees to mellow out. Right on, dawg.
