Daisy is probably five years old, give or take a year. She is a Shar-Pei mix that was found roaming the streets in August 2007. We plucked her from an apparent neglectful life and brought her to our sanctuary. She was obviously unspayed since her body screamed, “I've had A LOT of puppies” - the biggest clue being that her nipples looked like a cow’s udders. She was probably relieved when we took her in to be spayed. However, once the vet opened her up he found that her uterus was infected. It’s a condition that female animals are prone to if not spayed called pyomatria (somewhat akin to human endometriosis). Basically pus fills the uterus which invariably results in death since the uterus literally implodes within the dog’s body. As a result, the internal organs are contaminated and the dog dies from massive infection. It’s an excruciatingly painful, horrible way to die. Usually, veterinarians recommend immediate euthanasia instead of allowing the dog to suffer (if it’s too late for surgery). Fortunately for Daisy, we found her when we did or she would have certainly died within the week. To imagine that happening to her, alone and immobilized by the pain, slowly rotting internally...well, it’s too horrible for words. After these few months at our sanctuary, Daisy has really blossomed (pun intended). It took her longer than most to recover from her spay but once she got her strength back, she turned into a playful and affectionate girl. She loves living here and although no one expressed interest in her since she’s been on our petfinder.com site, she’s an easy dog to live with. She’s very loving and intelligent companion and gets along with the other dogs (especially the young ones). Being more mature, Daisy isn't prone to chaotic behavior although she can get just as excited as the young turks when it comes to treat or hike time. She has the most endearing expressions and coupled with her layers of wrinkles, it makes for some precious photographs (as you can see for yourself). She’s the type of dog who always cocks her head when you talk to her. She loves listening to everything being said to her, as if every word is absolutely fascinating, no matter what you’re saying. How many humans treat you like that? Daisy seems to like every dog here although some more than others. Herman, our new tiny Beagle, seems to have caught her eye, mainly because he’s super sweet, very small and totally passive. She and Kathy also hang out together although Chessie likes to literally jump into their conversations from time to time. You can tell Daisy was a great mother - she’s incredibly tolerant, kind and indulgent. If there is a argument between any of the dogs, Daisy is quick to break up their disputes in a mature and effective manner...”no fighting in the inner sanctum!”.
